The GE-EC module allows GENIUS EC motors to communicate directly with the GENIUS controller over the Modbus protocol.

Each fan becomes a smart device that continuously exchanges information with the control system.

In addition to receiving its operating setpoints, each motor reports its key performance data in real time, including;

  • Speed (RPM)
  • Power draw (watts)
  • Internal temperature
  • Operating status

This continuous communication lets the GENIUS smart controller fine-tune each fan’s speed to the actual needs of every zone in the barn. Ventilation becomes more uniform; temperature swings are reduced and livestock benefit from a more stable environment.

The system also monitors each motor’s operation around the clock. If a fan fails to start, stops, jams or runs abnormally, an alarm is sent immediately so you can act before barn ventilation is compromised.

With simplified wiring architecture and no amperage boards required, the GE-EC module shortens installation time, makes the electrician’s job easier and lowers material and labour costs.

Combined with the high efficiency of EC motors, these benefits deliver more precise ventilation, better energy efficiency and a significant reduction in electricity consumption compared with conventional motors.

The GE-EC module is a GENIUS electronic controller that connects to a fan equipped with a GENIUS EC or GENIUS ECP motor. Each fan is controlled independently, so ventilation adjusts automatically to the needs of every zone in the room. Thanks to Modbus communication, each motor’s performance data is reported to the GENIUS controller in real time, providing continuous monitoring and quick detection of any fan fault.

Each fan fitted with a GE-EC module responds to the actual temperature at its own location. Ventilation is therefore adjusted independently for each zone rather than on the average of the room’s probes, delivering a more uniform temperature throughout the barn.

Unlike a conventional system, where the controller only sends commands to the fans, Modbus communication allows true two-way exchange between the GENIUS controller and each fan. In addition to receiving its operating setpoints, the motor reports its performance data and operating status in real time, letting the system immediately detect any fault, such as a fan that fails to start or stops while running.

The GE-EC module delivers energy savings of up to 50%, thanks to a GENIUS EC motor that maintains high efficiency across the full speed range, unlike a traditional AC motor.

Monitrol’s GE-EC module is compatible with GENIUS brand EC motor fans only.

Both modules let the GENIUS controller manage ventilation independently in each zone. Each fan is controlled individually and reports its status in real time, making it easier to detect abnormal operation quickly.
The main difference lies in the type of motor and the amount of information available.

  • GE-EC: designed for GENIUS EC motors with built-in smart electronics and native Modbus communication. It reports detailed data, including speed (RPM), motor temperature, power, current and advanced diagnostics.
  • GE-AC: designed for conventional AC motors. It mainly reports power and current, which provides effective monitoring of fan operation, but with less data and less room for future expansion.

EC motors also adjust their speed automatically to maintain more consistent air flow when conditions change. For example, they can compensate for the back pressure caused by wind.

The GE-EC platform is also scalable: new features can be added through software updates.

In short: choose the GE-EC for more data, more consistent air flow and a scalable solution. The GE-AC is a reliable solution for monitoring and controlling conventional AC motors.

A GE-MGCB/485 communication gateway can support up to 31 GE-EC or GE-AC motor modules.
Since a GENIUS controller can use up to two gateways, a maximum of 62 motor modules can be managed with a single GENIUS controller.

Yes. Each GE-EC or GE-AC module ships with one temperature probe.

To ensure reliable communication between the modules, the sensors and the GENIUS controller, use a cable that meets the following specifications:

  • Two twisted pairs
  • Electrical shielding with a drain wire
  • AWG 22, 24 or 28 gauge
  • Maximum recommended length of 457 m (1,500 ft.)
